There’s something magical about wandering through a botanical garden—surrounded by towering trees, tiny wildflowers, vibrant florals and sun-dappled pathways that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a painting. Over the years, I’ve visited some of the most breathtaking gardens across the country, and I’ve learned that the right outfit doesn’t just look beautiful—it helps you feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable as you explore.
This post is a mix of outfit inspiration, practical tips, and snapshots from some of my favorite garden strolls. Whether you’re planning a weekend visit or just daydreaming of blooms and wide-brimmed hats, I hope this guide inspires your next garden-ready look.

Garden-Ready Style: The Essentials
Before we dive into specific outfits, here are a few tried-and-true tips that will help you dress your best while still staying comfy during your garden adventure:
Comfy Shoes (But Make Them Cute): Botanical gardens can mean a lot of walking on gravel, stone paths, or grass. Flat supporting sandals and stylish sneakers are always a good bet.
Light Layers: Morning dew, mid-day sun, and shady groves all make temperature shifts likely. Lightweight cardigans, vests, and kimonos are garden essentials in my book!
Sun Protection is Chic: Think sun hats, oversized sunglasses, or a breezy scarf that doubles as a wrap.
Fabrics that Breathe: Stick with natural materials like linen and cotton—especially in humid gardens or greenhouses.
Flowy Silhouettes: Dresses and skirts that move with the breeze always photograph beautifully among the blooms. Strolling the botanical garden in a short summer dress keeps you cool as well.

Here are some of my favorite outfits and the stunning botanical backdrops as I strolled through the gardens. Each garden inspired a different mood—and wardrobe moment.
Filoli | Historic House & Gardens | Woodside, California
Vibe: The vibe of Filoli is elegant, timeless, and serene—with a touch of grandeur.
Look: Since I was visiting Filoli in September and the Bay Area can be windy and cool, I opted to dress moderately warm. I wore a lightweight pink sweater, jeans and the good ole' standby tennis shoes.
Why It Worked: The breathable fabric kept me cool and the color of the sweater looked fantastic in photos.

Japanese Tea Garden | San Francisco, California
Vibe: This garden offers a serene experience while viewing the beauty of traditional Japanese esthetics.
Look: Lightweight sweater with bell bottom sleeves, jeans, cross body purse, tennis shoes and sunglasses.
Why It Worked: The sweater kept me warm while under the vast number of shading trees through the gardens.

Atlanta Botanical Garden | Georgia
Vibe: The summer I attended this garden was when the Alice in Wonderland garden theme was there. Every direction I turned had a creative and whimsical feel!
Look: Crisp white & black stripe cotton knee length dress, oversized sunglasses, and neutral block-heel sandals.
Why It Worked: The breathable fabric kept me cool, and the clean, simple lines of the dress really popped against the wild, colorful background. The cross body purse was perfect to hold my garden map while staying hands free most of the time.

Missouri Botanical Garden | St. Louis, Missouri
Vibe: A blend of natural beauty and historical significance, this garden "wowed" me in September with the beautiful cascade of different celosia plants.
Look: You may remember this dress from a previous garden visit. It is perfect to look a bit dressy yet stay casual at the same time. I paired it with a vest, crossbody purse and tennis shoes.
Why It Worked: Utilizing the vest, I stayed warm as I strolled through the garden in September.

Biltmore Estate & Gardens | Asheville, North Carolina
Vibe: Incredibly amazing architecture and beautifully designed gardens.
Look: While visiting this garden during warmer months, I opted for floral kimonos for a casual yet dressier vibe and paired it with coordinating shorts and a skort. Big sunglasses are a must during mid day bright sun!
Why It Worked: The lightweight kimonos kept me cool yet made me feel dressy while strolling through the elegant gardens, mansion and conservatory.

What to Pack for a Botanical Garden Day
To keep things dreamy and practical, here are a few extras to throw in your bag (note: always check the rules for each garden to see what is allowed!):
Refillable water bottle (stay hydrated!)
Lip balm with SPF
Lightweight tote or crossbody bag
Portable phone charger (you’ll take more photos than you think!)
Notebook or sketchpad for quiet moments among the blooms
