A List to What's in Bloom by Month for Seasonal Bouquets in Tennessee

Hey Flower Friend! Welcome to my list of "What's in Bloom by Month". This list is based off my experience as a Flower Farmer in the Middle Tennessee region and my experience planting plants much earlier than generally planted.  Due to this, we are able to have blooms in season earlier than if we planted at the normal seed packet times. January:

No fresh flowers in bloom. Flower Farmers are currently starting a lot of seeds for Spring blooms and tending to their fields where many fall planted Spring flowers are slowly growing.  Hellebore are just starting to bud up with some varieties beginning to bloom but it is too early to harvest for cut flowers. 

February:

Generally, not much in bloom in terms of fresh flowers. Early Daffodils are just starting to bloom but peak harvest season is still weeks away. More varieties of Hellebore are coming into bloom but generally still too soon to harvest. For the longest vase life of a hellebore, it is best to cut when seed pods are starting to form. Some flower farmers have mastered forced tulips which could be an option for locally sourced flowers. 

March

The earliest of Spring flowers are beginning to roll in!

Daffodils are blooming in quantity throughout the month. 

Anemones are beginning to bloom by mid-March. 

Peach blossom stems are in bloom mid-March. 

Hellebore are coming into season for cut flowers. 

Tulips are beginning to come into season late March. 

Poppies begin to come into bloom mid-March.

April

Anemones continuing to bloom with the addition of even longer stems. 

Ranunculus come into bloom mid-April.

Tulips are in bloom throughout the month. 

Bachelor's Buttons begin to come into bloom early April. 

Viburnum foliage in season for cutting. 

Sweet William coming into bloom late April. 

Peonies come into bloom. 

Iris come into bloom. 

Late April these blooms slow down production or stop producing all together: Daffodils, Tulips & Peonies (many flower farmers may have lot of blooms of these in dry storage for the coming weeks)

May

Snapdragons come into bloom early-mid May. 

Larkspur comes into bloom mid-May

Bupleurum comes into bloom mid-May.

Nigella comes into bloom mid-May.

Yarrow comes into bloom mid to late May. 

Sweet William producing an abundance of bloom. 

Penstemon in bloom mid-April 

Sweet Peas come into bloom. 

Strawflower comes into bloom late May. 

Statice comes into bloom late May. 

Phlox comes into bloom mid-May.

Baptisia blooms mid-May.  

Sunflowers throughout May depending on weather. 

Garden Roses in late May. 

Late May these blooms start to slow down or stop producing all together: Poppies, Ranunculus, Anemones, Peonies, Hellebore, Iris, Nigella (flowers turning into pods now)

June

Rudbeckia

Garden Roses in bloom throughout June. 

Yarrow

Larkspur

Strawflower

Snapdragons

Bachelor's Buttons

Statice 

Phlox, tall garden comes into bloom mid-June. 

Penstemon and Nigella have turned into pods. 

Dahlia (if tuber over wintered. Peak Dahlia season is in the fall.) 

Marigolds, tall begin to come into bloom mid-June. 

Scabiosa comes into bloom mid-June.

Feverfew comes into bloom early to mid-June. 

Zinnia comes into bloom late June. 

Sunflowers in bloom throughout the month. 

Cosmos comes into bloom late June. 

Celosia comes into bloom late June. 

July

Lisianthus come into bloom early July and continue throughout the month. 

Zinnias in full bloom throughout the month. 

Cosmos in full bloom throughout the month. 

Sunflowers in full bloom throughout the month. 

Celosia in full bloom throughout the month. 

Strawflower continue's to bloom.

Statice continue's to bloom. 

Marigolds continue to bloom. 

Basil starts to flower by the end of the. month. 

What has slowed in production or stopped producing all together towards the end of July: Larkspur, Sweet William, Feverfew, Bachelors Buttons, Rudbeckia, Yarrow, Snapdragons, Phlox

August

Zinniain full bloom throughout the month. 

Cosmos in full bloom throughout the month. 

Sunflowers in full bloom throughout the month. 

Celosia in full bloom throughout the month. 

Marigolds in full bloom throughout the month. 

Rudbeckia Triloba in bloom mid-month. 

Hydrangeas in bloom. 

Basil is flowering. 

Dahlias beginning to come into bloom. 

Strawflower and Statice are blooming sparingly. The heat of the summer has slowed production. 

September

Dahlais in bloom all month. 

Zinnias, Cosmos, Sunflowers, Celosia and Marigolds continue to be in bloom. 

October

Dahlais in bloom all month. 

Zinnias, Cosmos, Sunflowers, Celosia and Marigolds continue to be in bloom. 

Heirloom Mums come into bloom late October. 

November

The abundance of fresh flowers have faded due to time of year and our first frost. The use of dried flowers really shine in these colder months. You can read a bit more about good flowers for drying in this blog post. 

December

Fresh greenery shines in December as it makes great accents to fresh winter wreaths.
