Selling Cut Flowers: My Journey Through Different Markets
Over the past 7 years, I've explored multiple ways to sell my fresh cut flowers that I grow. Each method has had its own challenges and rewards, and through trial and error, I’ve learned valuable lessons about selling flowers. If you’re looking for inspiration or ideas on where to sell your own blooms, here’s a look at my journey through different markets and what I’ve discovered along the way.
Bouquet Subscriptions
A bouquet subscription is a service where customers receive fresh flower arrangements on a recurring basis—typically weekly, biweekly, or monthly—throughout the growing season. It allows flower lovers to enjoy locally grown, seasonal blooms while supporting local flower farms. Subscriptions often offer unique, farm-fresh varieties that aren’t found in traditional grocery store bouquets, making each arrangement special and ever-changing. They are perfect for gifting, brightening up homes or offices, and creating a connection between the grower and the customer. Bouquet subscriptions provide a reliable income stream for flower farmers while offering customers a convenient way to enjoy fresh flowers regularly. For my bouquet subscriptions, I contacted a local home goods store and asked if their store could be my pick up location for my subscription customers. They happily agreed as it brought great foot traffic to their store. While bouquet subscriptions are a great outlet to consistently have a place for your flowers to go, I found with my busy Mom life that it restricted me on what I could do with my kids in the summer. I was constantly tending to the flowers to make sure I had enough top quality blooms for my subscribers. I don't want this seen as a negative but the reality that flower farming is a constant commitment of time since we are working with perishable products
Custom Arrangements & Deliveries
I have done a whole lot of custom arrangements over the years. My first year growing cut flowers, I didn't really know what I was going to do with all the flowers. I started sharing my journey online. Naturally, friends and family were some of the first people to receive my arrangements. They would post about them on social media and other people started to see. Before I knew it, strangers were starting to contact me for flower arrangements! My first year growing cut flowers, I also got established with a church and made them arrangements when needed. I did a lot of deliveries in the early years. If you are considering doing those, make sure you factor in your delivery time and gas in your cost. It all adds up- including your precious time.
Weddings: Growing & Designing
A few years into my cut flower growing journey, I saw that I really loved to design with flowers. I began to take on a few weddings a year where I grew a custom pallet for the brides and I designed the wedding too. It is so rewarding being able to tell the bride about all of the custom flowers she has in her bouquet grow just for her. You have to really know your planting and bloom times to execute this well. I definitely leaned on some of those cut and come again crops to help me accomplish this task!
Pop Up Shops
Hosting pop up shops during the holidays is a great way to chat with existing customers and meet new ones! I've worked with different retail stores to sell my fresh winter wreaths.
Workshops
Workshops are a great way to bring others together to relax, have some flower fun and learn a thing or two! I've hosted private one on one workshops to a room full of flower lowers. One of my most recent workshops was a dried flower pumpkin workshop!
Private Events
I've had the honor of growing and creating a collection of flowers for private events such as bridal showers, baby showers, birthdays, funerals and business gatherings.
Wholesale to Florists & Flower truck
While I've never done wholesale on a large scale, I've been able to provide unique florals to florists and a flower truck looking for something local and specific.
Content Creation
I love incorporating my flowers into content creation by collaborating with brands and businesses that align with my passion for beauty, gardening, and education. Whether it's styling seasonal blooms for product photography, creating floral-inspired tutorials, or showcasing how flowers enhance everyday life, my farm-grown flowers add a natural and artistic touch to visual storytelling. Partnering with brands and businesses allows me to bring unique floral content to their audiences while sharing my knowledge in growing and designing with flowers. These collaborations not only highlight the beauty of seasonal blooms but also create engaging, inspiring content that connects with flower lovers everywhere.
Digital Sales Outlets
This is another form of content creation. Over the years, I've used my flowers to create online workshops for digital conferences, affiliate marketing and E-books. To date, I have written 2 E-books. You can find out more information about them in the Flower Shop. Through product photography, I am able to visually craft my E-books for enhanced learning for my education wanting customers.
Speaking Engagements
Through my experience with growing cut flowers, I have been hired to speak at events, which I love to do!
Mother's Day
That's the flower Super Bowl. If only Valentine's Day were in the warmer months!
Selling cut flowers has been an incredible journey, filled with creativity, adaptability, and deep connections with my community. From bouquet subscriptions to workshops, weddings, and online sales, each method has allowed me to share the beauty of flowers in a unique way. Whether it’s through teaching others how to grow their own blooms or curating special floral designs, I’ve learned that selling flowers is about so much more than just business—it’s about storytelling, connection, and spreading joy. No matter the avenue, the heart of it all remains the same: bringing the beauty of flowers into people’s lives.
